To the Families of Cohasset Elementary School:
I hope this note finds you doing well and enjoying the start of the 2009-2010 school year! I’m writing this letter to reinforce the importance of the Free and Reduced Lunch Program to our school.
Free and Reduced Lunch Applications (PDF) will be sent home in Tuesday folders for our families to complete. Qualifying families can receive reduced or no-cost meals for students. But what many people aren’t aware of is that by filling out this form you can greatly help support our school (even if you don’t qualify for the lunch program).
What people don’t know is that this program also provides money for schools to spend on educational support and materials through a program called Title I. Title I is a Federal program that provides funding to schools to improve mathematics and reading instruction for students. Every child that qualifies for Free or Reduced lunch generates money for the school district to use.
This past year Cohasset did not qualify for Title I (because of low overall percentage of students qualifying and the number turning in paperwork). What this means is that our school did not generate any funds for our children. However, thanks to Federal Stimulus Funds we’ve been able to continue fund our Title I program for this year. The Title I program helps fund three part time Title I Reading Instructors at Cohasset.
So, the good news is that for this year we will continue to have Title I support. The bad news is that if we do not qualify for Title I next year we will lose the support of those three valuable positions. As I mentioned earlier, we can only qualify for these funds if families turn in the Free and Reduced Lunch Form.
If you have not already done so, please fill out a Free and Reduced Lunch form and send it back to school. Even if you don’t think you will qualify, fill it out. All information is confidential, no one at Cohasset Elementary will see it. Filling out the form takes only a few minutes, and it can have a huge impact on our students.
Forms can be dropped off in the office.
Free and Reduced Lunch Applications
What you didn’t know
Free and Reduced Lunch Applications:
- Need to be filled out each year.
- May help families qualify for reduced lunch prices.
- May help our school qualify for Title I support.
What is Title I?
Title I is a Federal Program.
Through Title 1, school districts can:
- Hire teachers to lower student-teacher ratio.
- Provide tutoring for struggling students.
- Create school computer labs.
- Fund parent involvement activities.
- Purchase instructional materials.
- Host professional development for teachers.
- Create pre-kindergarten classes.
- Hire teacher assistants.
Students do not have to receive free or reduced lunch to benefit from Title 1.
Schools receive Title 1 funding based on the percentage of their student enrollment that qualifies for free or reduced lunch.
Parents can complete an application for free or reduced lunch at the beginning of each school year.
Thank you for reading this! Have a great day.
