A good question from a Murphy parent. Here was my short hand response:
Great question, here are some things we use to try and balance classes: needs of kids, matching child/teacher, boys/girls, math and literacy skills, behaviors, any known family/child issues, separating any kids that need to be separated, etc.
Some things are very concrete with data, some observational, some through informal conversation and observations. We take about a half day for each grade level. Current grade level teachers and I meet (with input from other staff when needed) and we do the best we can knowing there are only so many classrooms and once the new classes mix it’s a whole new ball game. We also do our best to include any adds or drops but those happen all year long. Hope this helps.
